The Beatles’ fashion: how it influenced fashion trends

In 2008, the city of Liverpool was named the European Capital of Culture. It earned this title thanks to its stunning beauty, historic buildings, remarkable architectural landmarks, and beautiful parks and squares. However, Liverpool is also famous for the legendary band “The Beatles”, who conquered the world with their music, energy, and performances. It’s worth noting that The Beatles became so popular that their style of dress was copied by millions. Today, we’re going to talk about how the style of The Beatles evolved and how the musicians influenced fashion trends in many countries around the world. Style Was a Decisive Factor in Their Success

There’s an old saying: “You’re judged by your clothes…” and it’s true that people first assess us by our appearance, which is why what we wear is so important. The Liverpool band The Beatles were a phenomenon in British music. These ordinary working-class lads became famous across the globe. Experts argue that the band won over audiences not just with their music, but also with their stylish image.

It all began in the 1960s when four young men from working-class backgrounds decided to form a band. The budding musicians moved to Hamburg. At that time, the band consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Pete Best, and Stuart Sutcliffe. To be frank, at the start of their career, it wasn’t their songs that wowed the German audiences, but their wild stage shows. It was during this period that Sutcliffe started wearing a leather jacket. His bandmates liked his style and soon began wearing leather too, making it their signature stage look.

When the musicians returned to their native Liverpool, their style set them apart from the rest of Britain’s showbusiness stars. The band became recognisable for their leather jackets, cowboy boots, and polo shirts. Pete Best later noted that many kids in their hometown started wearing leather jackets to emulate them.

Interestingly, Paul McCartney was hesitant to wear a leather jacket for a long time. As the band’s popularity grew, he insisted that “the Beatles” should abandon the leather jacket image.

From Leather Jackets to Tailored Suits

The band’s manager, Brian Epstein, insisted that the boys swap their leather for smart, custom-made suits. It’s worth noting that suits were not a novelty in show business at the time; they were standard practice in the British pop industry and among black American vocal groups. The Beatles’ suits were made by the famous tailor Dougie Millings. The main goal of the new image was to make the band look more professional for potential record labels. The musicians wore traditional single-breasted suits with white shirts and black ties, but their hairstyles added a certain European chic. This was followed by the collarless suits from Pierre Cardin, which became an iconic element of the group’s visual style.

As the band changed, so did the musicians’ style, incorporating colourful jackets, scarves, trousers, and glasses.

By the end of 1968, the band members were dressing very differently, favouring paisley tunics and Nehru jackets in saffron-like colours, paired with velvet-trimmed shoes.

John Lennon — The Band’s Fashion Icon

John Lennon was the founder of the popular group The Beatles. He was an idol for the youth of the 60s and 70s, and he also had his own distinctive style that many tried to copy.

  • Round Glasses. This accessory was the musician’s trademark. The shape of the glasses remained constant, although he often changed the size and colour. They were always with John and gave him a unique chic. In 2007, one of his pairs of glasses was sold at auction, reportedly for one million pounds.
  • Tailored Suits. Our Liverpool native also loved this look. Lennon, along with the other band members, wore suits with turtlenecks or skinny ties. It looked spectacular, and soon most young people were striving to replicate the musicians’ style.
  • Opening a Shop. When The Beatles became famous, John Lennon decided to open a fashion boutique in London called Apple. Unfortunately, the boutique only lasted for a year (1967-1968).
  • A Love for Accessories. It wasn’t just glasses that our local hero loved. It’s said that he was the first member of the group to wear a Breton cap. He also wore wide-brimmed hats, berets, and other headwear.
  • Denim. In the 1970s, denim was extremely popular, and John Lennon was a fan. Initially, he wore skinny and cropped jeans, later opting for wider, more comfortable styles. He also loved to wear a denim jacket with a shearling collar.
  • The White Suit. This was another of his recognisable looks. The musician and his beloved Yoko Ono began dressing in all white. Lennon’s white trouser suit was particularly iconic, making the pair look like eternal newlyweds.

These were the looks of The Beatles, who won the hearts of the public all over the world. Their style was copied not only by people in Liverpool and Britain but by young people in other countries too.
