We’re used to doing sport at home, in gyms, cheering on athletes on the football pitch, at competitions, and so on. Many athletes who have brought fame to our region were born in Liverpool, and a good number of them are women. Today, we’re going to talk about Katarina Johnson-Thompson, a well-known English track and field athlete who is a two-time World Champion and a two-time Commonwealth Games champion. You can read more about her on the liverpoolka.com website.

What’s known about the athlete’s childhood and education?

Katarina was born in Liverpool in 1993. Her parents divorced when the future athlete was a few years old, so she lived with her father in Nassau for a while. Then she returned to England and lived near Liverpool with her mother.

Katarina started attending St. Mark’s Catholic Primary School. It was here that our local talent developed an interest in athletics. She then went on to Catholic High School, followed by Liverpool John Moores University, where she studied sports science.

Sport – the main thing in life

As mentioned above, Katarina Johnson-Thompson first encountered athletics during her school years. She then decided to dedicate her life to sport.

She won gold at the World Youth Athletics Championships in 2009. At the 2012 Multistars competition in Italy, our local girl broke Jessica Ennis’s junior record. Subsequently, Johnson-Thompson set a new personal best at the TNT – Fortuna Meeting in the Czech Republic.

At the 2012 World Championships, the athlete didn’t participate in the full heptathlon, but she decided to compete in the long jump. This proved to be the right decision, as Katarina clinched gold.

In 2012, the Brit also competed for Great Britain at the Summer Olympics. She finished 13th in the women’s heptathlon. After the Olympics, the athlete was nominated for the “European Athletics Rising Star” award. Johnson-Thompson then won the “Lilian Board Memorial Award,” which was presented to junior athletes.

Active development of her sports career

In 2013, Katarina Mary Johnson-Thompson finished fifth in the heptathlon at the World Championships.

In 2014, the athlete set a new personal best, this time in the long jump. This result propelled her to second place in the British rankings for this event.

Just a year later, our local talent won the pentathlon at the European Indoor Championships. Also in 2015, she finished 28th in the heptathlon at the World Championships.

At the 2016 Olympic Games, our fellow countrywoman took sixth place in the heptathlon and set a new British high jump record. In the same year, Johnson-Thompson parted ways with her coach, Mike Holmes, who had been training her since 2008.

Instead, the athlete moved to France and began training with a team led by Bertrand Valcin.

In 2017, our local girl competed in the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships, but didn’t secure a medal.

She made up for lost ground in 2018 when she won the World Indoor Pentathlon Championship and the heptathlon title at the Commonwealth Games. She then secured second place in the heptathlon at the European Championships.

2019 brought further victories and achievements. In this year, Johnson-Thompson set a new personal best and won gold at the World Athletics Championships in Doha.

2020 proved less successful for our compatriot. She nearly missed the Tokyo Olympics due to an Achilles tendon rupture. After recovering, Katarina still competed and was in fifth place after the first three events. However, during the 200-meter sprint, the athlete suffered a calf muscle tear and was disqualified.

Just two years later, our compatriot won the heptathlon at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. In 2023, another victory followed – gold at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Sport is a vital part of our lives.
