Childhood and Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The future tennis star was born in Liverpool in 1934. She grew up in a wealthy Jewish family; her parents were originally from Russia. During her childhood, Angela moved several times, living in places such as South Africa, London, North Wales, and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to note that from a young age, Angela Buxton experienced significant antisemitism, facing prejudice and discrimination for being Jewish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Development of Her Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Angela’s passion for tennis began while she was at boarding school in North Wales. Her mother noticed her talent for the game, so they moved to London for Angela to pursue the sport more seriously. They applied for membership at the prestigious Cumberland Club but, sadly, Angela’s application was rejected because she was Jewish. In 1952, Angela and her mother moved to Los Angeles in the United States. They applied to another sports club, only to be rejected again for the same reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angela Buxton began training on public courts. Despite this, the Liverpool native was coached by the legendary multi-time US champion, Bill Tilden. Just one year later, she won the singles title at the Maccabiah Games while representing Great Britain. In 1954, Angela joined the Great Britain team and was ranked fourth in the country. A year later, Buxton broke into the world’s top ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1956 was a year filled with victories and accolades. As a result, Angela Buxton was ranked world number five by ‘World Tennis Magazine’. However, late that year, the athlete began to suffer from a serious condition, tenosynovitis, in her wrist. Angela was forced to end her tennis career at the age of just 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coaching Career and Writing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But her time in tennis wasn’t over. Buxton began a coaching career. In addition, she started writing books on topics such as the fundamentals of tennis, doubles tactics, and how to learn the sport correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angela Buxton also became a founder of the Israel Tennis Centers. And in the 1960s, she opened the Angela Buxton Tennis Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Liverpool native lived a long and full life, passing away in August 2020 at the age of 85.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tennis is a popular sport that not only builds muscle but also helps to improve the respiratory system, circulation, and heart function. Incidentally, a game similar to modern tennis first appeared in England in the second half of the 19th century.
