Dreamed of an Acting Career from Childhood
Our fellow Liverpudlian was born in Liverpool in 1942. Her father was a grocer. She attended two schools: Heatherlea and La Sagesse. Additionally, Rita studied shorthand and typing.

In 1961, Rita starred in the film “A Taste of Honey.” For her work in this film, she received a BAFTA and the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. And in 1963, Rita received a Golden Globe Award as the Most Promising Newcomer – Female.
Subsequently, she had roles in other films: “The Girl with Green Eyes,” “The Leather Boys,” “Doctor Zhivago,” “The Trap,” “Smashing Time,” “The Human Factor,” and many others. Not Just an Actress, but an Activist Too
In 1962, the actress married photographer Terry Bicknell. The couple had two daughters, but they decided to divorce in 1976. Five years later, Rita married again. Her second husband was a filmmaker. The couple lived in Canada for eight years before divorcing. The actress also had a relationship with a German writer.
2005 was a difficult year for Rita. Her 33-year-old daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, her daughter recovered and even gave the actress a grandson. Her daughter’s diagnosis deeply shocked Rita, leading her to become an activist in the breast cancer movement. The actress gave several interviews to raise awareness among women about this terrible disease.
It’s worth adding that breast cancer is difficult to self-diagnose. That’s why systematic check-ups are necessary. To prevent the development of the disease, it’s important to visit a mammologist regularly, wear comfortable underwear, prefer breastfeeding after childbirth, and adhere to a balanced diet. The actress knows firsthand what it’s like for a loved one to battle cancer. That’s why she strives to help other women so they seek medical attention promptly.
